Free motion sewing lesson no.1- Getting ready to stitch

The batting is a piece left over from a quilt I made. It is a polyester/cotton mix and I'm only using it because it is a scrap. There are cheaper types of batting available, so if you are going to buy a small amount to use for practising on, then the plain polyester types are the cheapest.

OK, any questions so far?
Well then I shall see you back here tomorrow!
Carole :)

Great start, i have a question about the feed dogs, i do have a BSR on my bernina which auto drops them, but i have done FMQ with them up, I asked my LQS about this and apparently its ok, to be honest i didnt see any difference with them up or down, is it just personal preference?
The verification word on this is hakedi, sounds a bit kiwi hey?

To answer your question Mrs A, the main objective is to be able to guide the fabric smoothly with your hands. Usually when you have the feed dogs up, their teeth grab the fabric making it hard to guide it to where you want it to go. That's why we disengage them. However, I don't see why you couldn't try both methods and find the best that suits you personally.
Hope that helps somewhat!
