Whew, I survived my first market

Well the market was last night. I survived. Just.
It was held in the staff cafe at work, with wine and nibbles.
Three people who were supposed to have tables cancelled at the last minute, and not many staff turned up either.
A bit disappointing really, considering the amount of time and effort you put into making the items to sell and then carting everything in and setting up.

My lavender bags and my fabric gift cards were very popular. I was very happy.

Here is my table, looking a bit cluttered :) -but interesting.
I did learn a few things....

It takes ages to set things up how you want them, in fact I had to re-do the display three times, even tho I had tried things at home.

When it's time to pack up everyone else in the room seems to be able to pack up much quicker than me.

Props are as important as your products.

And finally, Murphy's Law dictates that almost everyone will have $10 or $20 notes. And they did, and I was ready for them! HA

I am thinking I might be tempted to give it another go......
Carole :)

Glad to hear it was a success - at least for the most part. It sure is a lot of work though!

Hi Carole, your table looked lovely, it really flows. I've got one coming up in a couple of weeks with my sister in law, we've done a couple, but I'm still learning, changing it up every time.. :) loads of learning to do thats for sure

Well done! I remember my Mom working for months and carting all her knitting and crocheting and other objects to sales. As you say, a lot of work.

Happy to hear that it went well for you. Your display looks great, lots of lovely work. You're right about props, they really can help. The craft fair I went to recently one stall had a really old dressmakers dummy, all faded and stained, draped in bunting, I went straight over as immediately I knew I'd find someone who likes shabby, vintage things like me. They really can set the scene :)

Well done! The table looks very inviting. Now that you've done one of these, you'll streamline your packing up and develop systems to make it go faster. So don't stop at one! Look at all you learned. This was the ice-breaker... perhaps next time more folks will have heard about this and will attend.

I'm glad you want to give it a go again. I've done a few and know I want to do more just not most of the ones I've done before :) I would love to shop at your table!

Congratulations of your first market and cheers to your energy to consider another. After years of doing these typs of shows I'm on the burn out end of them. LOL But I remember how exciting it was in the beginning. Here's a tip for you, pack your items in things you can use as risers, like boxes (cover with fabric for display) or a couple (vintage?) suitcases that can be laid flat and stacked. This gets items up closer to eye level.

each time IS a learning experience and different things sell different venues too...always wondered HOW people that sell food at fairs manage to know what to have on hand

your table looks cute...go for it Missy!

Well done!
It can be a bit dissapointing but, now you have a taste for it?
The next one will be easier and you'll get into the swing of setting up better each time.

Well done, love your table. I used to do a market many years ago, it takes time to finally work out a table setting that suits. Used to amaze me how some people could set up and pack in no time at all. It takes practice. Have fun.

I'm with Linda- love your buntings! Your table is a visual feast (I would want to dig right in!) Congrats on surviving your first event (and making some money in spite of it all!). I hope you DO try it again!

It all looks beautiful. I am one of the last to pack down at markets and it takes me a long time to get my head around the set up thing. Hopefully this is a start of things to come. The first time is always the scariest. Best wishes to you.

YeS, you should make a go of it a second time. Don't do it just "once" - go for it, sweetie, your song is playing in your soul and the universe is singing with you. *wink* Love the look of your table, all in all it was worth the experience. Keep it up.

Wow you put some work into getting ready for this - I'm glad you had some success - and fun - you had some really neat things for sale :-)

I felt exactly the same at my first market. I still haven't done many, but will keep trying. Some have been soul-destroying as far as expense, but at least I always come away with a buzz from all the nice comments. Also, it's a great way to network with other crafters - and in person! I also have a very hard time with pricing and with 'pushing my own work'. It's so easy to undervalue ourselves. Your things are absolutely gorgeous. I would feel like I'd hit the jackpot if I found your stall at a market.
